Natalia Bażowska, born in 1980 in Dąbrowa Górnicza, has lived and worked in Katowice since 2005. Her interdisciplinary educational path combines medicine with art: from 1999 to 2005, she studied at the Silesian Medical University, and in 2007, she began a doctorate in psychiatry at the same institution, defending her thesis in 2010 on emotions evoked by visual messages in people with depression. Simultaneously, from 2007 to 2012, she trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, graduating with honors from the painting department. This unique combination of scientific and artistic knowledge became the foundation of her work, in which the body, psyche, and nature intertwine in the exploration of existence.
The beginning of Bażowska’s artistic career dates back to 2011, when she won first prize in the Hestia Artistic Journey competition and in the Young Art Review “Fresh Blood” in Wrocław. From that moment, she abandoned her medical practice, focusing exclusively on art. In 2012, she received a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship, and in 2013—a distinction in the International Modessque Painting Competition, a nomination for the Geppert Competition, and awards at the University of Arts in Poznań and in the New Image/New Perspectives competition. In 2017, her painting “Presence” received a distinction at the 43rd Bielska Jesień Painting Biennale, and in 2021—an honorary distinction for the work “Mountain” (2019) at the 45th edition of that biennale. In 2020, she received another scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Bażowska’s main inspiration stems from a fascination with the concept of life, which has accompanied her since 1998. Raised in the mountains, close to nature, the artist emphasizes a deep bond with the environment, manifesting in a dialogue between humans and the animal and plant world. She draws inspiration from the collective subconscious, empathy, and mind projections, questioning social and interspecies relationships. She uses diverse media: painting, sculpture, video, installations, and drawing to analyze the experience of being human and existence. Key projects include the installation “Rodzisko” (2012) at CSW Kronika in Bytom, symbolizing rebirth and the continuous journey of life; the video-performance “Luna” (2014), depicting friendship with a she-wolf; the cycle “Children of the Earth” (2011–2017), exploring forest themes, shown among others at the 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art “Clouds ⇄ Forests” at the Tretyakov Gallery (2017, cur. Yuko Hasegawa), at Zachęta (“Leże”, 2015), CSW Kronika (“Luna”, 2016), and BWA Olsztyn (“Territory Tamed”, 2018). In 2016, she created the project “12 per minute” at Tabakalera in San Sebastian, synchronizing breath with the ocean’s rhythm, and “External Memory” at Blanca Soto Gallery in Madrid. The “Steppe Soul” cycle, inspired by travels and the need for discovery, was presented at Rodriguez Gallery in Poznań (2016), at “Cool Down” in Katowice (2018, COP24), and “Landscapes of the Anthropocene” in Ustka. In the years 2019–2025, Natalia Bażowska continued her dynamic career development, earning new awards, scholarships, and participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. In 2019, she took part in the group exhibition “Pałac Sztuki”. The year 2020 brought her a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. In the same year, she presented a solo exhibition “Poufność” at Gallery 12 in Cieszyn and participated in group shows: “More Than Animal Animal” at Gallery 12 in Cieszyn, “Eureka or I Discover” at the Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw, and “Komorebi” at BWA Katowice. In 2021, she received an honorary distinction for the work “Mountain” (2019) at the 45th Bielska Jesień Painting Biennale. She presented a solo exhibition “Mirror of the Soul” at Gallery Jedna Druga in Szczecin. She also participated in group exhibitions: “Refugia” at Arsenał Gallery in Poznań, “We Are Present” at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (final of the Hestia Artistic Journey Competition), “We Bloom” at Hos Gallery in Warsaw, and “Butterfly Effect” at Arttrakt Gallery in Wrocław. In 2022, her works appeared in the group exhibition “Exuberance. Atlas of Infinite Possibilities” at the State Gallery of Art in Sopot. The year 2023 was marked by a solo exhibition “I have outgrown my skin” at ESTA Gallery during Warsaw Gallery Weekend, exploring authenticity and emotions in the era of artificially created images. In 2024, she participated in the exhibition program of the Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art (BGSW), presenting a selection of works from previous editions of the Young Art Biennale “Fish Eye”, and in an exhibition organized in the Błędów Desert as part of the “Law of the Desert” project. 2024 also included participation in the project “The Center of Worlds is Here” in Przemyśl and the exhibition “Voluntariness” at BWA in Bydgoszcz. In 2025, the artist participated in the group exhibition “Abundance” at the National Museum in Moldova. In the same year, TVP Kultura produced a report on her work “What Life Really Is” (currently available on TVP Kultura and VOD). In her latest cycle “I Paint Minds”, Natalia Bażowska explores complex emotions and mental states, such as power, vulnerability, happiness, frustration, and desire—all that fills the space between birth and death and defines our identity as humans. This series, a continuation of her interdisciplinary practice combining art with psychiatry, translates observations of the world into a unique artistic language, creating multifaceted images that provoke both intellectual and emotional reflection. Works from the cycle emphasize the evolution of her artistry from earlier projects (2012–2023) toward a deeper analysis of the subconscious and human existence. |

Jej interdyscyplinarna ścieżka edukacyjna łączy medycynę z sztuką: w latach 1999–2005 studiowała na Śląskim Uniwersytecie Medycznym, a w 2007 roku podjęła doktorat z psychiatrii na tej samej uczelni, broniąc w 2010 roku pracy dotyczącej emocji wywoływanych przez komunikaty wizualne u osób z depresją. Początek kariery artystycznej Bażowskiej przypada na 2011 rok, kiedy zdobyła pierwszą nagrodę w konkursie Hestia Artistic Journey oraz w Przeglądzie Młodej Sztuki „Świeża Krew” we Wrocławiu. 10 Od tego momentu porzuciła praktykę lekarską, skupiając się wyłącznie na sztuce. W 2022 roku jej prace pojawiły się na grupowej wystawie „Exuberance. Atlas of Infinite Possibilities” w Państwowej Galerii Sztuki w Sopocie. Rok 2023 zaznaczył się solową wystawą „I have outgrown my skin” w Galerii ESTA podczas Warsaw Gallery Weekend, eksplorującą autentyczność i emocje w epoce wykreowanego sztucznie wizerunku. W 2024 roku brała udział w programie wystawienniczym Bałtyckiej Galerii Sztuki Współczesnej (BGSW), prezentującym selekcję prac z poprzednich edycji Biennale Młodej Sztuki „Rybiego Oka” oraz w wystawie organizowanej na Pustyni Błędowskiej w ramach projektu „Law of the Desert”. 2024 rok to również udział w projekcie „Centrum Światów jest tutaj „ w Przemyślu oraz wystawie „Dobrowolność” w BWA w Bydgoszczy. W 2025 roku artystka uczestniczyła w zbiorowej wystawie „Obfitość” w Muzeum Narodowym w Mołdawii. W tym samym roku TVP Kultura wyprodukowała reportaż o jej twórczości „Czym tak naprawdę jest życie” (aktualnie dostępnym na TVP Kultura oraz VOD). W swoim najnowszym cyklu „Maluję umysły” Natalia Bażowska eksploruje złożone emocje i stany psychiczne, takie jak moc, bezbronność, szczęście, frustracja i pragnienie – wszystko, co wypełnia przestrzeń między narodzinami a śmiercią i definiuje naszą tożsamość jako ludzi. Seria ta, będąca kontynuacją jej interdyscyplinarnej praktyki łączącej sztukę z psychiatrią, tłumaczy obserwacje świata na unikalny język artystyczny, tworząc wieloznaczne obrazy prowokujące zarówno intelektualną, jak i emocjonalną refleksję. Prace z cyklu podkreślają ewolucję jej twórczości od wcześniejszych projektów (2012–2023) ku głębszej analizie podświadomości i ludzkiej egzystencji. |
