The title speaks of a state in which the "self" ceases to be a coherent whole. This is not just an identity crisis, but a literal dismantling: the dismantling of what we once considered ourselves. This could be trauma, depression, a psychedelic experience, an existential crisis, or a moment of radical transformation, a moment when the old "self" must be dismantled so that something new can emerge. The painting captures that painful yet fascinating "in-between" stage, when we are already dismantled, yet not yet reassembled.
