" Beginning” is a painting created by Natalia Bażowska as part of the ERGO Hestia Group’s Annual Report for 2020, titled “Minority Report.” As a graduate of the Silesian Medical University (PhD in psychiatry in 2010) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice (diploma in 2012), Bażowska combines medical and psychological knowledge with artistic expression. Her works often explore identity, the origins of existence, and the relationships between humans and nature, questioning anthropocentrism. This project represents the artist’s contribution to the unique format of the report, where art meets business, provoking reflection on the future, minorities, and the dynamics of change in the context of the 2020 pandemic.
The painting “Beginning” symbolizes the starting point of existence, individual and collective identity in the face of uncertainty. Based on observations of the human psyche and nature, the project examines beginnings as a moment of transformation, where “My ID is I am”—a phrase emphasizing personal identity that transcends boundaries. In the context of the “Minority Report,” inspired by themes of prediction and minority perspectives, Bażowska emphasizes the lack of rigid boundaries between the past and the future, treating the beginning as a force shaping social relations. Participants in the report, through the painting, are invited to reflect on empathy, mental healing, and a transhumanist perspective on identity. This is an artistic experiment that combines intuition with science, exploring the collective subconscious and the mysteries of existence, contrasting with earlier works such as “Rodzisko” (2012) or “Whole Life Under Stress” (2013), transitioning to the theme of beginnings in times of crisis.
The whole constitutes a static yet immersive visual element, engaging the sight and provoking an emotional reaction, making it an integral part of the report’s narrative.
The project “Beginning” debuted as part of the ERGO Hestia 2020 Annual Report “Minority Report,” in collaboration with the Artistic Journey of Hestia Foundation (APH). The report, published in 2021, includes contributions from three artists: Natalia Bażowska, Norbert Delman, and Krzysztof Maniak, exploring themes of minorities, prediction, and change in the context of the pandemic. Bażowska, winner of the main prize of the Artistic Journey of Hestia in 2011, brings to the report a psychiatric and artistic perspective, emphasizing the contribution to the discussion on identity and mental health.
“Beginning” not only documents Bażowska’s fascination with the origins of existence, but also encourages dialogue on the topic of identity and healing in today’s world.

The character is just before the moment of transformation, the energy of this change is visible, it squeezes through the armor made of brush strokes and blows out with blue light. The armor will fall apart in a moment. The figure is crowned with a plinth, such as we are used to giving to monuments. It is also built of armor, rigid. Change also slowly seeps into it. My hero is just before liberation from the rigid rules imposed on him, and in a moment he will cease to be an ethos monument and will become a human being. Almost all our lives, we put on orders, bans, and orders, layer by layer, not always serving us, but appreciated by the society we come from. We go with this heavier and heavier armor until we freeze, because they are so heavy, as a proud monument to artificially accepted norms. We are admired as a monument but dead inside. Only if we allow ourselves to be human and, however pathetic it sounds, we start to listen to what is inside, ourselves, the remnants of our "being", that the energy of change will start to grow and grow in us. Until we finally have the strength to smash the armor. This is the beginning of a sense of true unity and coherence. This is also the title of this work, "The Beginning”.

Początek” to obraz malarski stworzony przez Natalię Bażowską w ramach Raportu Rocznego Grupy ERGO Hestia za 2020 rok, zatytułowanego „Raport Mniejszości”. Jako absolwentka Śląskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego (doktorat z psychiatrii w 2010 roku) oraz Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Katowicach (dyplom w 2012 roku), Bażowska łączy wiedzę medyczną i psychologiczną z artystyczną ekspresją. Jej prace często eksplorują tożsamość, początki istnienia oraz relacje między człowiekiem a naturą, kwestionując antropocentryzm. Ten projekt stanowi wkład artystki w unikalny format raportu, gdzie sztuka spotyka się z biznesem, prowokując refleksję nad przyszłością, mniejszościami i dynamiką zmian w kontekście pandemii 2020 roku.
Obraz „Początek” symbolizuje punkt wyjścia egzystencji, tożsamość indywidualną i zbiorową w obliczu niepewności. Oparty na obserwacjach psychiki ludzkiej i natury, projekt bada początki jako moment transformacji, gdzie „Moje ID to jestem” – fraza podkreślająca osobistą tożsamość przekraczającą granice. W kontekście „Raportu Mniejszości”, inspirowanego motywami przewidywania i mniejszościowych perspektyw, Bażowska podkreśla brak sztywnych granic między przeszłością a przyszłością, traktując początek jako siłę kształtującą relacje społeczne. Uczestnicy raportu, poprzez obraz, są zaproszeni do refleksji nad empatią, uzdrowieniem psychicznym i transhumanistycznym spojrzeniem na tożsamość. To eksperyment artystyczny, który łączy intuicję z nauką, eksplorując zbiorową podświadomość i tajemnice egzystencji, kontrastując z wcześniejszymi pracami jak „Rodzisko” (2012) czy „Całe życie w stresie” (2013), przechodząc do tematu początków w czasach kryzysu.
Całość stanowi statyczny, lecz immersyjny element wizualny, angażujący wzrok i prowokujący emocjonalną reakcję, co czyni go integralną częścią narracji raportu.
Projekt „Początek” zadebiutował w ramach Raportu Rocznego ERGO Hestia 2020 „Raport Mniejszości”, we współpracy z Fundacją Artystyczna Podróż Hestii (APH). Raport, wydany w 2021 roku, obejmuje wkład trójki artystów: Natalii Bażowskiej, Norberta Delmana i Krzysztofa Maniaka, eksplorując tematy mniejszości, przewidywania i zmian w kontekście pandemii. Bażowska, laureatka głównej nagrody Artystycznej Podróży Hestii w 2011 roku, wnosi do raportu perspektywę psychiatryczną i artystyczną, podkreślając wkład w dyskusję o tożsamości i zdrowiu psychicznym.
„Początek” nie tylko dokumentuje fascynację Bażowskiej początkami istnienia, ale także zachęca do dialogu na temat tożsamości i uzdrowienia w dzisiejszym świecie.

" Postać jest tuż przed momentem przemiany, energia tej zmiany jest widoczna, przeciska się przez pancerz zbudowany z pociągnięć pędzla i wydostaje na zewnątrz niebieskim światłem. Jeszcze chwila pancerz się rozpadnie. Postać jest uwieńczona cokołem, takim jaki mamy zwyczaj dawać pomnikom. Jest również zbudowany z pancerza, sztywny. Do niego również pomału przedostaje się zmiana. Mój bohater jest tuż przed wyzwoleniem z narzuconych mu sztywnych reguł, za chwile przestanie być etosowym pomnikiem a stanie się człowiekiem. Prawie przez całe życie zakładamy warstwa po warstwie nakazy, zakazy, przykazy nie zawsze nam służące ale za to cenione przez społeczeństwo z którego pochodzimy. Idziemy z tym coraz cięższym pancerzem aż zastygamy w bezruchu, bo tak bardzo są ciężkie , jako dumny pomnik sztucznie przyjętych norm. Jesteśmy podziwiani jako pomnik ale martwi w środku. Tylko jeśli pozwolimy sobie na bycie człowiekiem i jakkolwiek patetycznie to brzmi zaczniemy słuchać tego co jest w środku, nas samych, resztek naszego „bycia” to energia zmiany zacznie w nas rosnąć i rosnąć. Aż w końcu będziemy mieli sile żeby rozwalić pancerz. To jest początek poczucia prawdziwej jedności i spójności. Taki jest tez tytuł tej pracy „Początek”."
